Original subtitles not appearing
« on: October 20, 2017, 06:29:17 pm »
I am having an issue with streams of movies that are mainly in English losing the subtitles for the brief parts where they are speaking a different language. For example, a stream of The Godfather would normally have English subtitles for the scenes where Michael is in Sicily. These subtitles should obviously be part of the original copy -- often times in their own style font and all that -- rather than from an external source. If anybody can help me with a response other than keep trying other sources until I get what I'm looking for, that'd be great. Thanks.

The subtitling that you see in Kodi are of two different types.

1)  Embedded subtitles - the movie distributor contracted subtitling for the movie AND the uploaded version that you are watching contains these subtitles.  DVDs may contain multiple subtitle tracks some of which may contain translations of "foreign" language script.  Unless the individual that uploaded the movie opted to include these subtitles you will not see them.  I'm sure you've seen lots of movies with Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese subtitles.

2)  External subtitles - these are subtitles that are produced separate from the video streams and are retrieved from a server such as Opensubtitles.org (https://www.opensubtitles.org/en/search/subs).  These subtitles are uploaded to these servers usually by volunteers.  Unless these volunteers translate the "foreign" bits to your language you won't see them either.  You can download subtitles for streams but I am not familiar with the procedure and you'll have to search for them yourself.

So as I see it you have several options:
  • Try different sources until you get what you want
  • Download subtitle tracks that contain the translations
  • Learn the foreign language yourself  :)
  • Volunteer to upload subtitles that you have created with the translation so that others may enjoy your work  8)
  • Don't watch films with "foreign" languages  ;D
